Morning vs. Evening Graduate Session at James Madison University

Which session time is best for your JMU graduation photos? And which will give you the best overall graduate experience?

This is a very important question you should be asking yourself as you consider your vision for your senior portraits. While both morning and evenings provide exceptional light to showcase JMU’s stunning campus, there will be some differences you should consider when deciding on when to book your session!

The truth is—both can be beautiful, but they create very different experiences and slightly different looks. Let’s walk through the differences together so you can confidently choose the session time that fits your vision, your personality, and your priorities.

Mornings

Morning sessions are scheduled between 8AM-10AM for the most optimal light and beautiful photos!

Morning sessions are perfect for you if:

  • You want fewer people in your photos and wait times.
Most graduates tend to schedule their sessions in the afternoons and on weekends. While mornings aren’t guaranteed to be empty, they typically have shorter lines and far fewer people. Students are typically roaming around campus and relaxing on the Quad in the afternoons.
  • Wilson Hall is a top priority.
Morning light at Wilson Hall is unmatched! The sun is behind you, meaning no harsh shadows, no squinting, and beautifully even light. If Wilson is your must-have backdrop, mornings are hands-down the best option.
  • You want a peaceful, relaxed experience.
Mornings tend to feel calm and quiet. There’s less foot traffic, fewer tour groups, and minimal background distractions, which allows us to move smoothly through locations.
  • Less chances of wind.
Harrisonburg afternoons can get impressively windy. Mornings are typically calmer, which is ideal if you want your hair to stay in place and prefer a more polished look.
  • You don’t mind an early wake-up.
Sessions usually begin around 8:00am. Some seniors wake up as early as 5am to get ready (not required, but common!). The bonus? Cooler temperatures, open parking at Grace Street Deck, and a quiet campus.

Evenings

Evening sessions are generally scheduled between 4PM-6PM for that soft golden hour light!

  • You are not an early riser.
If you’re a night owl or know you don’t feel your best early in the morning, afternoon sessions allow you to show up rested, energized, and feeling like yourself.
  • You prefer warmer temperatures.
Spring mornings—especially in March and early April—can be cold. Afternoons warm up significantly, which is ideal if you don’t love chilly weather or want lighter outfit options.
  • Golden hour is your favorite.
There’s always a chance for glowing sunset light, warm tones, and dreamy skies. While not guaranteed, when the timing and clouds align, sunset sessions can be amazing!
  • You don’t mind crowds or flexibility.
Afternoons are busier. That can mean waiting for locations, working around other seniors, or adjusting our plan on the fly. While I always make it work, this can sometimes mean fewer images or worst-case skipping a spot.
  • Wilson Hall isn’t your main focus.
The sun sets in front of Wilson, which creates harsher light and squinting. We’ll absolutely still take photos there, but Wilson looks its best with overcast days or in the morning.
  • You’re okay with people in the background.
In the afternoons, students often sit on the grass, walk through the Quad, or relax with friends. While I can edit out a few people, large groups aren’t always removable.

No matter which you choose, I’ll guide you through every step—from planning locations to posing and timing—so your JMU graduate session feel stress-free, personal, and uniquely you. Join the interest list and be the first to book your session here!
