Planning my own wedding changed me in ways I didn’t expect, not just as a person, but as a wedding photographer.
I went into the planning process thinking I had it all figured out. After all, I photograph weddings for a living. I know timelines, vendor communication, and how important photography is on a wedding day. Being on the other side, being the bride instead of the photographer, opened my eyes to things I hadn’t fully understood before.
What I learned is something I now wish every couple knew before booking their wedding photographer.
Every photographer works differently, and that’s okay. Not every photographer is the perfect fit for every couple, and that is also okay. Your wedding day only happens once, and the photographer you choose plays a much bigger role in your experience than most people realize.
Communication Is Everything (And Stress You Don’t Need)
One of the biggest lessons I learned from my own wedding was just how important consistent communication is.
Wedding planning is already stressful enough. When you’re waiting days for a response from a vendor, especially when you’re asking simple questions, it creates unnecessary anxiety. A great wedding photographer doesn’t need to be available 24/7, but they should be clear about their office hours and response time.
In my opinion, hearing back within 48 hours (excluding weekends or after hours) is a reasonable expectation. Even an automated response explaining when you’ll hear back makes a huge difference. Clear communication builds trust. It reassures you that your photographer is organized, present, and on top of things, and that confidence carries into your wedding day.
Every Photographer Works Differently
Being a wedding photographer myself, I quickly realized something important: not everyone runs their business the way I do or provides the same structure to their experience for couples.
Some photographers are more hands-off. Some are very structured. Some thrive on energy and connection, while others are quieter and more observational. None of those approaches are inherently wrong but they do affect how your wedding day feels.
Adjusting to a different workflow was harder than I expected. It taught me that couples deserve to understand how their photographer works, not just what their photos look like. The more aligned your expectations are from the start, the smoother everything feels leading up to your day.
Your Photographer’s Energy Can Make or Break Your Wedding Day
This is something I can’t stress enough.
Your wedding photographer is with you for nearly every intimate and emotional moment, from getting ready, private letters, first looks, portraits, tears, laughter, chaos, and celebration. Their energy matters.
If your photographer feels disengaged, unenthusiastic, or disconnected, it can quietly affect your entire experience. On the flip side, a photographer who brings calm confidence, excitement, and encouragement can completely elevate your day.
I always say your photographer should feel like a bonus bridesmaid, someone who is there to support you, hype you up, calm your nerves, fix your veil, and remind you to breathe. Photography is the priority, of course, but serving you always comes first.

Why You Should Always Review Full Wedding Galleries
This is a lesson I learned the hard way and one that changed how I run my own business.
Social media shows highlight reels. Photographers will always post the very best images from a wedding day, but that’s only a small percentage of what you’ll actually receive. When you’re hiring a photographer, it’s crucial to review full wedding galleries.
Full galleries show consistency. They show how a photographer handles harsh lighting, dark reception spaces, fast-moving moments, and real-life imperfections. You don’t want to be surprised when you receive your gallery and notice editing inconsistencies, missed moments, or images that don’t match what you expected.
Because of this, I now share near-full wedding galleries on my blog so couples can see exactly what I deliver, start to finish. Transparency builds trust, and trust is everything when you’re handing over your memories.
Pose Direction Builds Confidence
One thing I didn’t realize until my own wedding was just how reassuring good pose direction is.
Knowing what to do with your hands or where to stand, how to move, or when to relax, makes a world of difference. Strong pose direction keeps things flowing, keeps you on schedule, and helps you feel confident instead of awkward or rushed.
A great photographer doesn’t just take photos, they guide you through moments naturally, without making things feel stiff or forced. That guidance creates images that feel effortless and genuine.
The Importance of Someone Who Notices the Little Things
Another detail that matters more than you think is having a photographer who notices the small things.
Hair in your face. A twisted dress strap. A boutonnière that’s crooked. A veil caught awkwardly in the wind. These tiny details can easily be fixed in the moment but only if someone is paying attention.
You’ll be so grateful later on when you look through your gallery and don’t see those easily preventable distractions. Having a photographer who is honest, attentive, and willing to gently step in makes a huge difference in the final product.

How to Tell If a Photographer Can Actually Direct and Communicate
This part can be tricky, but there is a way to get a better sense of it.
One of my biggest recommendations is to look up the photographer you’re considering on TikTok or similar platforms and watch their behind-the-scenes content. Seeing how they talk to couples, direct movement, and manage real moments tells you far more than a perfectly curated Instagram feed ever will.
If a photographer has no behind-the-scenes content at all, no session clips, no wedding day direction, no client interaction, I personally see that as something to pause and think about. You’re hiring a person, not just a portfolio.
Do Your Homework Because There Is No Redo
As much as I don’t want to add pressure, the truth is this, you don’t get to redo your wedding day.
Not everyone is who they claim to be on social media, and not every beautiful photo represents a consistent experience. Taking the time to research, ask questions, and truly understand who you’re hiring is one of the most important decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding.
Your photographer isn’t just documenting your day, they’re shaping how it feels while it’s happening and how you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.
And after experiencing my own wedding, I can say this with confidence: choosing the right photographer is worth every bit of effort.
